Pass the Knowledge Tests & Get A Learner's License
You must score at least an 80% on the knowledge tests required for your type of vehicle. The general knowledge test must be taken by everyone. Tractor trailer drivers must pass the combination test. All bus drivers must take the passenger test. If your vehicle is equipped with air brakes you must pass the air brakes test. If you want to drive a school bus you must pass the school bus test. If you want to transport hazardous materials you need to pass the hazardous materials test. If you want to haul liquids in bulk a tanker endorsement is required. The doubles and triples test must be taken by anyone that wants drive multiple trailer combinations. All Class A and B applicants must pass the pre-trip inspection written test.

Take the Skills Test
The first portion of the skills test is the basic vehicle control section. During the basic control test you will be asked to complete several maneuvers including: straight backing, offset backing left or right, parallel parking, and alley docking. The second portion of the skills test is the on road test. You will be tested for safe and controlled driving in real situations.

Texas CDL Handbook

CDL Class A
Any combination of tractor and trailer with a GCWR of 26,001 or more pounds provided the GVWR of the vehicle(s) being towed is in excess of 10,000 pounds. Examples of CDL Class A vehicles include: tractor trailers, double trailers, and triple trailer rigs. You must pass the general knowledge test, combination endorsement test, and the air brakes test to get your Class A. Other endorsements such as the double/triple trailer endorsement are required only if you drive a vehicle with double and triple trailers.

CDL Class B
Any single vehicle with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, or any such vehicle towing a vehicle not in excess of 10,000 pounds GVWR. Examples of CDL Class B vehicles include: most straight trucks, dump trucks, vacuum trucks, crane trucks, and cement trucks. You need to pass the general knowledge test and the air brakes test.

CDL Class C
Any single vehicle, or combination of vehicles, that is not a Class A or B, but is made to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver, or is transporting material hazardous materials. Examples of CDL Class C vehicles include: coach buses, shuttle vans, or school buses. You need to pass the general knowledge test. Depending on what vehicle you plan on driving you may have to take the air brakes test, passenger test, and school bus endorsement.
